Every January if you've got an 8-18 year old and you're a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, your kids will bring home a goal booklet along with the challenge to set some goals.
But as a parent, how do we get started? What are we supposed to do with these booklets?
What if you had a plan?
THE FIRST CONVERSATION GOES WELL, BUT THEN IT KIND OF FIZZLES. THEY DON'T WORK ON THEM AND WE DON"T FOLLOW UP..
You try to be open-minded and ask your kids to choose their own goals, but they end up setting goals to make cookies or beat the next level on their video game.
You try to get them to set some useful, age-appropriate goals, but they don't like the pressure and don't want to do goals you're picking for them. Or they set the same old boring goals to "be nice" or do homework every day right after school.
You sit down on Sunday to set goals, but once they walk out of the room, they never think about the goal again, until you sit down with the booklets to try again.
Life's been hard . . . let this help
I knew this announcement would change church goal programs, so I teamed up with Nichole Eck & Covenant Communications to write & publish the book Goal Getters as a deep dive into goals with kids.
The new church program launched in Jan 2020 just as the Goal Getters Book hit the shelves in Deseret & Seagull Bookstores. Just a few weeks later Covid hit.
We were all surviving, so the goal booklets got put on the back burner. Over 1,000 people bought the book, but it got put on a shelf, just like our kids goals. But Covid's over, so we are re-introducing the book!

Coaching Your Kids Along the Covenant Path

PROCESS OVER COMPLETION
We all set goals, but we aren't taught a lot about the process of accomplishing them, except to push through and persist. With Goal Loops, we learn to check in with our goals often. We ask: What is my purpose for this goal? What's going well? Why is that working for me this time? What's not going well? What am I learning? Do I want to keep working on this goal?
Practical tips for getting started with an emphasis on process over completion
Simple but super-powered Goal Loop skill to move your goals along.
Clear instructions for creating space for coaching conversations
7 Strategies for putting on the coaching hat as a parent
BECOME A COACH FOR YOUR KIDS
Parents wear a lot of hats. This book teaches you a new hat to put on, the Coaching Hat. Using professional helping skills, you learn to create a safe space, listen, honor autonomy, and use questions to connect with your kids in a coaching conversation. As a parent you can ask them to set goals, but a coaching conversation helps uncover which goals they really want to do.
OWN YOUR GOALS
Own your goals. Ask yourself, who really wants this goal? Am I feeling pressured by hovering expectations? Do I want to do this goal?
How knowing where our goals come from helps us choose better goals
How accepting and using our strengths and weaknesses makes us better goal setters
CONCRETE WAYS TO FIND STRENGTHS
Stop checking on and "fixing" your weaknesses every 5 minutes. Work from your strengths instead. Learn how to find your signature strengths.
MOTIVATION WITHOUT PRESSURE
Stop pressuring kids in the name of motivation. Use autonomy support to motivate kids instead.
How we can support clean motivation in our kids
How we can pursue goals even though outcomes aren't guaranteed
OUTCOMES AREN'T GUARANTEED
Our goals guide us to the outcomes we want. But the growth happens along the way. Outcomes aren't guaranteed, but going after them rocks!
IMPROVEMENT IS ITERATIVE
How does improvement really work? 1% better every day? Nope. It's a wild ride with bits of progress, plateaus, backslides, and pivots.
How failing frequently with small goal loops fuels progress
How calming emotions and thoughts keeps goal conversations on track
CALM EMOTIONS ON THE FLY
The simple effective skills of naming emotions and reframing thoughts calm an upset inner world almost immediately.
ENGAGEMENT OVER ACCOMPLISHMENT
The power of change is in paying attention to the journey, not focusing and pushing through to accomplish the goal.
How engaging in goals helps us become what we are striving for
Transform your conversations with your kids

lifetime of good
The book "teaches self evaluation methods that will serve a lifetime of good. I love it and have recommended it several times over."
What they are wanting to never do again...

SOME COMMON QUESTIONS WE HEAR OFTEN
Every time we set goals, we totally forget about them. Is this really going to help?
Lots of parents think so. It's pretty typical to set goals on a Sunday afternoon and then never think about them again.
We use check-ins that get to the heart of the problem. Instead of checking on how far you are (cue feelings of failure if you never even started), we check in with how the last bit of effort (or lack of it) is going. What went well? What didn't? What'd you learn? When kids do nothing, generally they learn that they need a reminder, they didn't actually know how to do the first step, or that they don't actually want to do the goal.
With that valuable info, it's time to pivot and create reminders, walk through first steps, or get in touch with what they really want.
If "some goals are private," then how do we talk to kids about goals?
Goal Getters teaches a simple process for checking in with how goals are going, not directing which goals they choose. Our short casual checkins eliminate the stress of talking about goals with your kids.
Is this directly tied to the Children & Youth Personal Development Booklets?
Yes and no. When the Children and Youth initiative was announced back in 2018, Nichole and I set out to learn all we could about having goal conversations with kids. We were excited about the upcoming changes.
In order to have the book published in connection with the January 2020 program, we worked with Covenant Communications to write the book months before the program came out. The book hits essential principles of goal conversations, but we didn't have access to the actual Children and Youth program to address it directly.
That's why we created a supplemental webpage with tips for implementing the Children & Youth Personal Development initiative. It has helps for both parents and leaders. The book is the meat, and the website ties it to the program. You can check it out in the bonuses.
Can I get the book on audio?
Yep - check out the audio at Deseret Book. It comes free with their monthly DB-Bookshelf or you can purchase the audio separately.
